Marinara sauce recipe

Wanted to share a tasty marinara sauce I came up with.

Large can peeled tomatoes

12 oz can tomato sauce

6 oz can tomato paste

(I use organic whenever I can)

Sauté some minced onion and minced garlic in EVOO.

While doing this I put the can of peeled tomatoes in my Nutra Bullet to basically liquefy (but not like water). After the onion and garlic are browned I add the ingredients above with a 12 oz. can of water. At this time I add the following… Continue

Lifestyle Changes

At this time I would like to skip over 6 months of my life and discuss something I feel is very important……my lifestyle change.  In particular, I would like to discuss my new diet.  I can’t say that I previously ate horribly.  I just had glaring weak points.  Over the past years I have reduced the red meat consumption and increased the poultry, pork and fish.  We even bought organic chicken and pork most of the time.  Due to digestive issues from my ileostomy, I tend to stay away from leafy…

Taking A Step Back

I’d like to take a step back before going forward with this blog.  Like I said previously, The Center for Cancer introduced me to so many wonderful people.  It was there that I truly appreciated what this dreadful illness can do to people.  I unfortunately witnessed many people with various forms of cancer and I saw what the cancer would do to them not only physically, but mentally and emotionally.   I also witnessed how so many of the patients maintained such a great attitude and spirit to…

Nearing the end.....Round 1

Well, six months and twelve treatments later, a lot of things had occurred in our lives.  The cancer basically consumed us.  Let’s see.  There was the neuropathy; first in the fingers and then in the feet.  Thanks chemotherapy!!!  There was the weight gain.  Yes, weight gain of about 20 pounds.  Thanks premeds!!!  I also lost most of the hair on my body; however, not on my head. Severely thinned, but not bald!!!  Also, Hurricane Irene hit that August and I was totally out of it that…

The Infusion Process

Like I said, the infusion process commenced with blood work and then an exam from Dr. Siegel.  I would also be weighed since they calculate the dose of chemo based upon your weight.  Then off to the infusion area.  Basically, the infusion process began with a few hours of pre-meds.  These were an assortment of anti-nausea drugs such as Emend, Zofran and Dexamethasone that were given to me prior to the Adriamycin, Bleomycin, Vinblastine and Dacarbazine.  I must say that the pre-meds did their…

Treatment Cycles Commence

Each and every treatment cycle commenced with blood-work and a visit with Dr. Siegel.  A CBC (Complete Blood Count) was utilized to ensure you were able to have your scheduled treatment cycle.  The primary counts they look at are your WBC’s (white blood cells which fight infection), RBC’s (red blood cells which is used primarily to see if you are anemic) and platelets (these control your bleeding).  Once these were deemed adequate and I received my exam from Dr. Siegel the orders were placed…

Starting the Process

Prior to starting the chemotherapy, Elena and I were able to sit with an Oncology nurse who thoroughly explained the entire process.  Gina Morelli-Wise gave us a wealth of information and of course had our heads spinning.  If we thought we were overwhelmed before, we were wrong.  Now we were really overwhelmed!  Gina went through the entire process and what to expect.  She reviewed the drugs, how they would be infused and the possible side effects.  She also reviewed all the pre-drugs that…

Time for the Tests

After being totally overwhelmed with being told you have cancer you are then barraged with information, procedures and tests that have to be scheduled before you can even begin your treatments.  If you weren’t TOTALLY overwhelmed before this, you will certainly be afterwards!  Basically, they have to stage the cancer to ensure the proper treatment and duration.  Since chemotherapy in itself is toxic to your body, you have to have these tests to measure your pre-chemo functions and then…

I have cancer

I will never forget the day.  In my wildest dreams I never imagined.  I even told my wife to go to work.  I told her that it would be a five minute appointment to remove the sutures and I’d be on my way back to work.  Then the words you never want to hear hit me like a sledgehammer, “you have cancer”.  The biopsy came back with a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  I guess the shock was due to the surgeon initially telling Elena (my wife) and me that everything looked good after the initial…

My family and I have been through a tough period the last 2 years.  I will be posting a piece here and there on our trials and tribulations and how we have overcome a tough situation.  I plan on writing an outline and following it so that I am not all over the place!!  I want to keep it to the point but I also want to share some things that may potentially help someone.  Well, that's all for now but there will be alot more coming.
